What to Do in an Outage
Preparedness is always the best plan in an emergency. In the event of a power failure, it is best to have the following available:
- At least one gallon of water
- Battery powered lantern
- Batteries
- Flashlight
- Portable radio
- A small supply of food
- Blankets and pillows
To simplify your emergency preparations, you may wish to choose a radio, flashlight, and lantern that use the same size batteries. Other Tips:
- Due to extreme risk of fire, do not use candles during an outage.
- Leave refrigerators closed. Food will last longer in an unopened fridge or freezer.
- Keep an old "standard" (not cordless) telephone handy, since they do not require electricity to work.
- Unplug sensitive electronic equipment.
Portable Generator Safety
During the occasional outage a portable generator can supplement your
electrical needs. however, there are many safety issues of which you
should be aware before hooking up your generator. Irresponsibly
connected portable generators may cause potentially fatal shock
to your co-op linemen.
