EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

Swisher Electric Cooperative, Inc. is now accepting applications for the position of:

JOURNEYMAN LINEMAN

Swisher Electric Cooperative is seeking an experienced Journeyman Lineman with a minimum of three (3) years of journeyman-level experience. Qualified applicants must possess the knowledge, skills, physical abilities, and competencies required‑level experience. Qualified applicants must possess the knowledge, skills, physical abilities, and competencies required to perform all duties associated with the construction, operation, and maintenance of the Cooperative’s transmission and distribution systems.

Responsibilities include:

  • Sets and disconnects meters as required or directed.  Read meters and collect disconnects as needed.
  • Erects steel, install buss work, switches and other equipment.
  • Performs hot linework, primary, and secondary.
  • Hooks up transformer banks on overhead and underground lines; takes call outs on overhead and underground lines; recommends changes on overhead and underground lines.
  • Buries primary and secondary cable, terminating all underground primary and secondary cable at transformer junction riser pole and all other points. Performs hi-pot tests, spots underground cable with a faultfinder from 600 to 100,000 volts.
  • Performs and assists in all types of hot line work from bucket truck and poles. Installs and sees that all regulators, capacitors, breakers, and switches are connected as required in accordance with RUS specifications. 
  • Looks for inefficiencies and reports problems that hinder the efficiency of work.
  • Follows policies and procedures and seeks input when information is unclear, inadequate or requires interpretation.
  • Completes any necessary paperwork accurately and timely to ensure business continuity and smooth office operations.
  • Studies, learns, and complies with all safety practices, procedures, and instructions.
  • Operate vehicles as directed by obeying all safety requirements.
  • Cuts right-of-way, trims trees, and chips brush if needed.
  • Operates all equipment used on the job and performs routine equipment maintenance.
  • Loads and unloads material and equipment and ensures that line trucks are kept stocked with sufficient inventory of supplies to make emergency repairs. Takes inventory of material and equipment on trucks and warehouse making sure tools are in good condition and properly used.
  • Returns all job locations to a neat, safe condition following completion of work, removing all cartons and discarded materials.
  • Participates in safety meetings.  Attends and participates in annual meetings as required or directed.
  • Reviews job briefings and confirms in writing the understanding of the assigned work.
  • Opening switches or installing grounding equipment to eliminate electrical hazards on damaged or downed lines and to ensure safe working conditions for repairs.
  • Installing electrical distribution and transmission components such as conduits, cables, wires, transformers, circuit breakers, and switches.
  • Performing maintenance and repairs on distribution and transmission systems and all related equipment.
  • Identifying issues with sectionalizing devices, circuit breakers, fuses, voltage regulators, transformers, switches, relays, or wiring using electrical testing tools and wiring diagrams.
  • Inspecting and testing power lines and associated equipment to pinpoint problems using diagnostic instruments.
  • Performs other work of this or any other classification requiring equal or lesser skills when assigned by supervisor. If qualified may be assigned the duties of foreman.
  • Assumes responsibility for performing on-call duties.
  • Assists the Crew Foreman in preparing workload.
  • Performs other miscellaneous job duties as assigned.

 

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must hold a valid CDL or be able to obtain one within six (6) months of hire.
  • Must be capable of working in all types of extreme weather conditions.
  • Knowledge of National Electrical Safety Code and APPA Safety manual.
  • Candidate must pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
  • Must reside within 15 minutes of the Swisher Electric service territory.
